TIPS TO STAY YOUNG IN YOUR 40’S

Q: I am in my early 40’s and want to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle as possible. What areas of my daily and weekly activities should I focus on?

A: The 40’s are traditionally a time when people begin to re-evaluate their lives, and when many Americans begin to worry about aging. Staying young means embracing the positive aspects of aging. In many eastern cultures growing old with dignity and joy is a blessing. Accepting where we are in the passage of life can be the most enriching experience of all.

You may want to take preventative heath measures regarding any family histories of health problems. Tests to consider if your family history includes disease are colonoscopies, prostate screenings, mammograms, and any heart disease related exams.

Your muscle mass begins to decline in your 40’s and even if your weight has relatively been unchanged in 20 years you should add muscle-building strength exercises to your fitness regimen.

Examine your attitude toward aging. Recognize middle age has its benefits, such as having more time to focus on your own interests as your children become more independent or you just gain more free time in general. Nurture yourself by striving to reach your goals and by maintaining a relaxed attitude toward life.

Nutritionally studies indicate that middle age is an appropriate time to add soy products like soybeans and tofu to your diet. Soy can help protect against prostate cancer and potential irritants that accompany menopause.

Maintain a healthy nervous system with periodic chiropractic adjustments. Drink plenty of water and get adequate rest.
