Chiropractors help with Osteoporosis

Q; I am 80 years old and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Can I still be treated by a chiropractor for my low back and neck pain?

A; Osteoporosis can be treated by a chiropractor as long as the degree of osteoporosis has been determined through diagnostic testing. Osteoporosis by definition is de-mineralization of bone. The density or thickness of bone is dependent upon the amount of minerals and vitamins stored within its cells. Osteoporosis is more common in postmenopausal women, chronic smokers, post traumatic conditions and patients with poor dietary habits. Osteoporosis is a slow and normal progression of aging. Most patients that have mild or moderate conditions will never know they have it and manage their lives asymptomatically. Severe or advanced osteoporosis may leave the body feeling weak, unstable and painful.

Chiropractors have to be careful treating patients with severe osteoporosis because the patient may have weak brittle bones. Aggressive or forceful adjusting is not recommended obviously in these cases. Gentle force techniques are not only advisable but tremendously helpful. Always let your doctor know if you have a history of osteoporosis. It can be detected with x-ray, MRI, CT-Scan and a bone density scan.

Besides chiropractic, nutritional supplementation of calcium, magnesium and multi-minerals are highly recommended. Increased water intake is imperative. You should always check with your personal physician before taking any supplement randomly. They can help you determine dosage and cater support to you as an individual.
