Baby Boomers Fear Decreased Physical Activity as They Age.

Q: I have recently celebrated my 50th birthday and after reviewing my future concerns, realize that my biggest fear is not being able to physically perform in all areas of my life. What preventative or maintenance procedures can I perform now to prolong my physical fitness and health?

A: A market study done by Sage Products and published in USA Today in April of this year, statistically demonstrated that adults ages 37 to 55 say their biggest concern about growing old is slowing down physically. You are not alone. The health consciousness of this same age group, what I consider the heart and soul of the baby boomers, is focused directly on longevity with the highest potential health.

Unless you have been living in a cave, you will observe a mass media blitz focused on the baby boomers. Vitamins, minerals, hair care products, weight loss, youth enhancements and over 40 abdominal flattening, (6 pack guaranteed) products are floating through your brain visually on TV, billboards, magazines and all day in your ears on the radio stations. Even if you perceive yourself as healthy, attractive and fit, after this media blitz you start to question yourself. Don’t be fooled by airbrushes and fast talking salesman. We are unfolding a new generation of health conscious parents.

The consensus of the baby boomers concerns about aging resulted in these stats: (I’m working on a chart) slowing down physically 83%, overall health 81%, retirement/finances 69%, becoming a family burden 56%, caring for an ill spouse 54%, and having someone to care for them 54%.

Considering activity and health are the primary concerns of your future and the majority of others your age. Let me suggest the following basic principals. The number one way to stay in shape is to stay active physically every day. Get a routine where you stretch or exercise every joint. Movement flushes dead stationary tissue out of joints, revitalizing the joint with fresh fluids full of minerals and vitamins. This prevents arthritis. Next, get enough sleep and eat sensible. Stay away from dense carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread and corn. Increase your water intake to 4 to 6, 12oz glasses daily. Mentally decrease stress through daily relaxation. Lastly, for existing irritation and future health maintenance there is nothing better than chiropractic care to maintain your health. Chiropractic adjustments add life to your years and years to your life.
